Cricut Cuttables Custom Embossing Folders + Blog Candy

Awhile ago I had some 50% off coupons for Joann’s so I decided to buy some custom cricut embossing folders.  I just got around to trying them tonight.  It was more difficult then I thought.  I read the directions very carefully and still my first attempt went straight to the garbage.

I tried to do a grouping of rose buds from the Walk In My Garden Cartridge.  The directions say to use blade depth 6, Speed 3, Pressure 5 and multi cut 2.  I followed the directions to a T.  It looked pretty good when I removed it from the mat.

Step 2 is to remove the outside paper around the design.  Which came off wonderfully.  Then you put it in the emobssing folder and run it through your embossing machine, (I use the the big kick) and then you are suppose to open the folder and remove the design part from the back.  The problem is that the cut did not go all the way through so on the back it was just a solid blank sheet.  It was not going to come off properly.  The instructions say multi cut 2, but even with a brand new mat and blade it did not cut through even a tiny bit.

I decided to try again with a less complicated design so I used the heart from the Weddings cartridge.  I set the multi cut on 4 hoping that would do the trick.

It cut out wonderfully but when I lifted it off the mat the back was not cut at all.  So I removed the outer front paper and adhered it as directions indicated.  Then I used my Martha Stewart knife and basically cut the paper portion of it by hand.  It turned out okay this way but I don’t understand why the cricut would not cut through it even on 4 multi cut.  Next time I will do the 4x multi cut 2x and see if that makes a difference.

This is what I ended up with.

Here is a sheet of paper that I embossed.

The embossing design did turn out well.  I did waste a few piece of paper the first couple times I embossed with the folder.  It is a little sticky from the left over residue and you have to pull the paper off the folder and it gets little waves it in.

There is one tip that I can give though that really helped me.  I took a rectangle from the George cart and sized it to the same size of the cuttables page which is 4.25×5.75 and then put my design in the middle.  That way I knew exactly how my project would work and where to put the cuttables on my cricut mat when it was time to cut.  Then I just deleted the rectangle before cutting.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience step by step with pictures it is most helpful for those of us who learn that way. I bet if you tried cutting the design on the machine then going around it with an exacto knife on a self healing matto make sure it cut through the back before you remove the paper backing it might work better. It would be awesome if you could get the page of hearts to work.

I wanted to thank you for the blog candy give away,
I love all of my embossing stuff, even though I seldom use it, what an awesome card it makes.
Thank you too for the free SVG’s.
They are always welcomed and it is so nice of you.
It is against my nature not to thank someone on the boards for their files, but it is also against my nature to be yelled at.
So, let me me say thank you for all the share you do, and for all the tips you share.
    Blessings to you.
Happy Birthday too for your daughter.
    I loved the invite.
    My G-daughter just turned 2 April 26th.
It is an awesome age to watch blossom.

Thank you so much for posting your experience with the Embossiing Kit. I had read about it and was very curious but I haven’t seen it anywhere except online. I guess our Joanne’s is too small.

  • Sheree:

Thanks for the step-by-step. The heart did turn out great! I haven’t tried this yet but I want to. Did you use the regular blade or the deep-cut blade?

  • I didn’t even know they made this. I must have my head in the sand. That is awesome. One of these days we will be able to do everything on our Cricuts.

I love how yours turned out. It’s too bad you had to deal with all those problems first though.

  • Kristina:

Thank you so much for explaining it so well and telling us what difficulties you had. I absolutely love how the heart came out.

  • admin:

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I used the regular blade and had the depth set on 6.

  • Laney Holloway:

That is really awesome. It turned out beautiful. YOur work is always great and your generosity with the blog candy is just wonderful! God Bless!

  • Thanks so much for the easy to understand instructions. I saw a demo for the Cricut embossing folders on the Nth Degree and they said to use 2x multi-cut also. Of course, theirs worked perfectly, but I have been afraid to try it because I have heard so many say it isn’t worth the money.

Please enter me in the contest. Thanks.

  • Jill:

Hi, Thanks for showing us how to do it. I would love to give it a try. I think that you are supposed to use the deep cut blade – did you try it with that? I just might have to research it, in hopes that I win! Thanks again!

  • Jill:

Beth, I just googled it and they say to use the deep cut blade. You might try the roses again with that, it would be such a pretty embossed page. This is the info I found.

Cricut Embossing: Now you can create personalized embossing folders using any Cricut design!

For use with the Cricut Deep Cut Blades.
    Recommended Machine Settings:
    Speed: 3 Med
    Pressure: 5 Max
    Blade Depth: 6
    Multi Cut: 2

  • admin:

    Hi,
The instructions that come with the cuttables say the regular blade should work on six and the deep cut blade should be 4.5., but thanks for the information. I will try the deep cut blade and see how that works.

  • Carisa:

I am SOOO glad you did this post!

I have been wanting these, but didn’t have anywhere local to get them… and quite frankly I was wondering how well they worked! Now I want to try! Thank you again!

I didn’t know nothing about embossable folders from cricut!
I was looking some machine for it.

  • Laura:

Thanks for showing how to use these. I haven’t tried it, I didn’t even know it could be done.

  • I was curious how the embossing stuff worked. Thanks so much for the step by step. I will sure like a chance at the giveaway to give it a try.

  • Great information. I haven’t tried the kit yet but I heard someone say that you can make your own with light chipboard, glue several layers together and use the plastic the cartridge boxes came in for folders. Your heart came out great and the embossing is beautiful. I have a tip: If the completed folders got some residual stickiness that might mess up your paper, sprinkle a little talcum or cornstarch in the folder and it will remove the tacky. Just make sure to brush it all out before you use it so it doesn’t dust your craftroom! -K

  • Wow, I haven’t seen these, but cool idea… Thank-you for sharing this…
    Hugs, christina

  • Chelsey:

Strange that I have never seen the embossing folders before. I love this! Thank you for this post and the pictures!

  • Toni:

Cool. I have one of these and wasn’t sure how to proceed. Gonna give it a try now. Thanks so much!
