I Used My Cricut To Make My Own Embossing Folders

The other day when I tried the cricut cuttables I thought that there must be a cheaper and easier way to make embossing folders.  I did it!  I used 3m transparency paper, cricut new arrival cartridge, 1 piece of chipboard, Design Studio, brayer (optional) and Beacon’s 3 in 1 Advanced Craft glue.

I created this pattern in Design Studio and then cut it with chipboard on 4x multi cut.  (I created a rectangle 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 to match an A2 card and then fit the flowers inside and deleted the rectangle before cutting).  I cut the transparency paper a little larger.. sorry I forgot to measure it.

I used the Beacon’s 3 in 1 Advanced Craft Glue and glued the outside (negative) of the design to the 3m Transparency paper.  I then rolled the brayer over it to make sure that the glue dried as flat as possible.

After the outside part was dry, like a puzzle I placed each flower back in to the negative.  I dabbed some glue on each flower piece.  I closed my embossing folder and then ran the brayer over it.

This is what I ended up with after everything dried.  The flowers glued to one side of the transparency paper and the negative of the cut glued to the other side.

This is the final result.  I embossed this with my Sizzix Big Kick.  I made my sandwich on the texturz setting on the multi purpose platform.  I first put down the first cutting pad, then the texturz rubber mat, the embossing folder with the paper inside, then the 2nd cutting pad and then a piece of foam on top.  It went right through my Big Kick.  I think that that embossed design turned out great.   I am sure you can use this same method on other machines like the cuttlebug.

Awhile ago I had some 50% off coupons for Joann’s so I decided to buy some custom cricut embossing folders.  I just got around to trying them tonight.  It was more difficult then I thought.  I read the directions very carefully and still my first attempt went straight to the garbage.

I tried to do a grouping of rose buds from the Walk In My Garden Cartridge.  The directions say to use blade depth 6, Speed 3, Pressure 5 and multi cut 2.  I followed the directions to a T.  It looked pretty good when I removed it from the mat.

Step 2 is to remove the outside paper around the design.  Which came off wonderfully.  Then you put it in the emobssing folder and run it through your embossing machine, (I use the the big kick) and then you are suppose to open the folder and remove the design part from the back.  The problem is that the cut did not go all the way through so on the back it was just a solid blank sheet.  It was not going to come off properly.  The instructions say multi cut 2, but even with a brand new mat and blade it did not cut through even a tiny bit.

I decided to try again with a less complicated design so I used the heart from the Weddings cartridge.  I set the multi cut on 4 hoping that would do the trick.

It cut out wonderfully but when I lifted it off the mat the back was not cut at all.  So I removed the outer front paper and adhered it as directions indicated.  Then I used my Martha Stewart knife and basically cut the paper portion of it by hand.  It turned out okay this way but I don’t understand why the cricut would not cut through it even on 4 multi cut.  Next time I will do the 4x multi cut 2x and see if that makes a difference.

This is what I ended up with.

Here is a sheet of paper that I embossed.

The embossing design did turn out well.  I did waste a few piece of paper the first couple times I embossed with the folder.  It is a little sticky from the left over residue and you have to pull the paper off the folder and it gets little waves it in.

There is one tip that I can give though that really helped me.  I took a rectangle from the George cart and sized it to the same size of the cuttables page which is 4.25×5.75 and then put my design in the middle.  That way I knew exactly how my project would work and where to put the cuttables on my cricut mat when it was time to cut.  Then I just deleted the rectangle before cutting.
